- Soviet Navy & Merchant Marine radio operators were required to set the ship's radios to the international emergency frequencies every 15 minutes for 3 minutes to "listen" for possible SOS or MAYDAY transmissions. The 3 minute red segments represent 500KHz, formerly the international Morse code distress frequency. The 3 minute pink segments represent 2182KHz RT, the verbal distress frequency. The 4-minute-wide bands around the chapter ring were used to time a radio alarm on ships that didn’t have a radio operator. A crewman would key and hold the transmitter for 4 seconds, wait a second & then key it again for 4 seconds, repeating the sequence 12 times for a total of 1 minute.
